lol D: I can't settle on any good brushes on ps. The reason I use SAI is because of SAI's brushes.. xD
:x can you upload the abr brushes you use for painting as an attachment?

@Espadon,
Sad but true... I feel like they think they are still using kid pix (do any one of you remember that on the OOOLLLDD Macintosh computers? XD) stamping away.
I always feel you should be proficient with just variations of a normal round brush before you start stamping away.
That said though, I like how photoshop brushes can add texture without consuming too much computer resources.
@Araiia,
I'm still using a large subset of m@'s brushes from conceptart.org
I feel like I'd be stealing his work if I uploaded them here. Instead, I'll link you to his thread:
(I LOVE his sketch book. <_> I feel envy.)
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=73169
You do have to register, if you don't have an account on CA.org, but it's free and definitely worth it

Art should be liberating and if you're instead restricting yourself to be reliant on stamps, especially ones that you didn't even make yourself, that's just backwards. Delusional self-titled 'artists' like that don't deserve any kind words.
I see works that are 90%+ made of custom brush stamping as just one hair shy of plagiarism [yeah you just merely cobbled it differently...], especially considering the vast majority of people don't make their own brushes.
It's just my personal opinion. The point should be made that as long as it brings home the bacon you can fight as dirty as you like.
Blue, is there a way to disable guide dragging in PS without disabling rulers?

to each their own standards and opinions
You know the grass brush that comes with photoshop?
Lol I cringe every time I see people making grass landscapes with it
there's a huge equine artist community on dA and I swear to god, like 80% of them use the grass brush and get 200+ favs on each pic they upload.

@Espadon,
Yeah it's that kid pix. Lol.
And I also was looking for a way to disable guides in photoshop... I don't use the ruler much though, so I can usually just get away with disabling them all together :\

That's a good example of the silliness that I was talking about. Custom brushes aren't that great when they make your art look the same as the over 9000 other artists also using that brush.
And I pressed F5 then waited for Photoshop to refresh. Phail.

You don't need custom brushes to be like the 9000+ other artists. You could just be bad.

The brush will be truly custom if you make it yourself and tell nobody the settings :D
I haven't spent much time tweaking around with ps brushes though, especially since I don't use the program for my main drawing.

I've made quite a couple of brushes in my brushset. Mainly, I just have some large boulder brushes for setting up mass early in a painting, and lots of "space junk" brushes which are just kinda cool to spay on in the beginning for some pseudo-detail. Oh and a few water brushes... they kinda suck, but I haven't found any decent water brushes, so I just fiddle around with my own.
Anyways, brushes are a great way to save time, but they are in no way necessary. Really helpful for painting large environments with an illusion of detail tho.

I had a bunch of brushes I made on my old computer...all of which are lost now, unfortunately.
I find I prefer playing with the settings on default brushes more, though.
Also, Araiia, check this out. If you use that, you can take brushes from newer versions of Photoshop and make them work in your version. It's been a long time since I've used it, so I don't recall exactly how it works, but if I remember correctly you can use it to convert a brush set into PNG images and then from there turn them back into a brush set in your version of PS.

For me, brushes are a great way of adding textures to a work without resorting to texture overlays. Water's linear randomness is probably best suited for manual execution; there are just some stuff that brushes don't do a good job of. Forcing a brush only brings out all the weak points.

Haha, I know what you, I do the same thing.
I haven't used another artist's custom brush set in so long. My entire brush collection at the moment has five brushes and four of those are the same brush on different softness settings. My most used brush is Photoshop's basic small chalk brush with a few settings (Other Dynamics, Wet Edges, Airbrush and Smoothing). That's all probably just 'cause I'm lazy though.
I will say something though, of all the brush sets I have seen and tried for the hell of it, this: My Brush Pack by `adonihs is the best. This man is a master with the digital canvas.

I wouldn't go that far. Precision doesn't make an artist. Adonihs's stuff are all latex and polyurethane, that is to say, the stuff is pretty and flashy, but lacks depth and power. The polish and detail attempts to distract your attention from fundamental problems in form and color. He's one of the better ones, but there are a lot more artists more deserving of that title.

Well, perhaps master was too stronger word.
For me, few (if any) digital artists will surpass the talent of Anry. I've learnt more from just viewing his artwork than I have from most artist's tutorials. Heck! I think it was his art that got me into digital at 14. I gave up on Painter pretty quickly though. XD

Artgerm is more masterful with Painter than Anry for sure. Michael Kutsche is probably the most impressive of all; there's a reason why he's behind familiar artwork such as this PC Gamer cover [PS & Painter only].

I love Artgerm too. I just have such fond memories of Anry's work, especially Sir Kurush. I really enjoy Michael Kutsche work. He's incredible for sure. Another artist whose art when I see it makes my jaw drop is Alon Chou. Haha, I could be naming artists all night.
